I would like to share my thoughts on the 2021 Quinta da Muradella Verdello Antiguo from Monterrei. It is, quite frankly, an astonishing wine. If I had tasted it blind, I might not have recognized it; I would have likely guessed something entirely different, perhaps a highly complex Chenin Blanc. For lack of a better word to describe its profound depth and harmonious integration, I find myself defining it as umami.
It is a wine that refuses to remain static, constantly evolving and blossoming in the glass. On the nose, it offers delicate notes of pink flowers intertwined with a variety of fresh fruits, all grounded by a distinct touch of wild yeast that adds remarkable character. The palate is a study in brilliant contradictions. It is exceptionally light and full of vibrant energy, actively making your mouth water, yet it possesses a rich, multidimensional thickness that entirely fills the palate. It is a wine that genuinely evokes happiness with every sip.
The natural sweetness from the fruit is impeccably judged. It is not overpowering but rather lands perfectly on the right side of the spectrum, beautifully counterbalanced by a pronounced salinity and a strong mineral backbone. Calling this wine merely complex feels like an understatement; it transcends that descriptor, culminating in an extraordinarily long finish wrapped in a lush, honeyed texture.
My wife tends to prefer the wines of Cantalapiedra for their lean, highly precise, and deeply mineral profile. However, to my palate, this Verdello Antiguo reaches a different dimension. It is a more decadent, lush, and profoundly layered expression of winemaking. I am deeply impressed by the producer’s vision. I send my highest regards and gratitude to the masterful artisan who crafted this sheer perfection.
